Ajax America Women

Another fun year that culminated in Ajax winning the 2007 US Women’s Open Cup…

Training started as usual in January with some new exciting players. We signed US national team players Danielle Fotopoulos, Mandy Clemens and Lindsey Huie. Plus England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley, Dre Alfiler from the San Diego Spirit in the WUSA, Kiki Bosio and Kendall Fletcher both from the US U21s, former US youth national team midfielder Carmen Bognanno, Leah Wilson who played last year in the German professional league, Kandace Wilson from C.S. Fullerton, the fastest player we have seen in soccer shoes, and Hilary Dunham the All-American keeper from Biola. Those plus our returning core of great players and we were ready to roll for the season.

Then the injuries, Danielle retired after US camp with knees that just didn’t want to play anymore. Mandy sustained a back injury in a friendly at USC that kept her out for the rest of the season and Lindsey developed a medical condition that kept her out of most of our league games. That’s why you have a squad. We also lost Kiki and Kendall for a number of games as they were playing and training with the US team preparing for the Nordic Cup which they won beating Germany in the final 4-0 in Finland.

Preseason against the colleges went well and then to WPSL. We went 14-0-0 winning the Western Division, plus traveling to the South West Division and beating both Utah teams 4-1. The WPSL Final 4 was in Florida. Because of injuries and the Nordic Cup, we traveled with 14 players, one of which was sick and couldn’t play. We tied F.C.Indiana  1-1 in the semi final after out shooting them 14-5 only to lose on PKs 4-3 after 30 minutes of over time.

The following week was the National Cup Finals in Seattle, this time we traveled with a bigger squad. First game was against Tony DiCicco’s Connecticut team which we comfortably beat 1-0. Unfortunately Dre Alfiler tore her ACL in the first 5 minutes (hate that artificial turf). In the other semi final F.C.Indiana beat Dallas 6-0. The final against F.C. Indiana was a great game. We went down 0-1 in a very even first half but came out firing in the second half and scored 2. Ajax 2007 US Women’s National Cup Champions. This is the 5th National Championship for Ajax since 1998.

So the season ended well. Kandace Wilson was the WPSL top scorer with 15 goals in 9 games, Karen Bardsley had 15 shutouts, Cami Boswell led the WPSL in assists with 10. Shannon Cross had 9 goals and 3 assists and April Colen was third in the WPSL with 7 assists.

Coach Brian Boswell was WPSL coach of the year for the second year running.
